Campaign to save black cab jobs hits capital

A campaign to save 100 jobs at the London Taxi Company hits London today

A protest by workers made redundant from the Coventry based, London Taxi Company will take place today when they travel to Liverpool and the Capital in a bid to save jobs.

Black cab taxi drivers in London will join a rally in support of the union who want the jobs to remain in the UK.

LTI's parent company Manganese Bronze went into administration earlier this month when 100 people lost their jobs. The Deputy General Secretary of UNITE said there has been interest from several parties in buying the company but they want assurance jobs will remain in the UK.

"At the moment we're still campaigning very, very hard to ensure we keep the plight of our members at LTI in the public eye, but more importantly to maintain production of the iconic London black cab in the UK and to get our members their jobs back."
– Tony Burke, Deputy General Secretary, UNITE

The company has faced difficulties with over 400 vehicles having to be recalled due to steering problems, though this is now thought to be solved.

Campaigners say their aim is to keep the plight of the workers in the public eye but they stress more importantly to maintain production of the iconic black cabs in the UK.

Today they will deliver leaflets at major transport hubs in their campaign to keep the factory open.

The union has also set up a campaign page on social networking site Facebook where they aim to build up public support over the next month.
