Woman caught drink-driving after being ejected from taxi for being boisterous


A woman drove home drunk after being ejected from a taxi for being boisterous, a court has heard.

Katy Tague had been out on the night of October 21 and caught a taxi home with a friends. But after the taxi driver asked them to get out, she decided to drive home.

Tague, aged 19, of Battalion Drive, Wootton, was stopped by police in Cliftonville at 4.20am on October 22, and was just under twice the legal limit, Northampton Magistrates Court heard today.

The lowest breathalyser reading she gave was 64 microgrammes of alchol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Tague, who represented herself in court, said her behaviour in the taxi was just that of friends having a fun night out, and she would lose her job as a result of the conviction.

She said: “I am totally ashamed of my decision. I did not go out that evening with the intention to drink and drive. We were asked to leave a taxi and I took the decision to drive. I am very sorry.”

Tague was fined £300 plus £85 costs, and banned from driving for 17 months.

If more cabbies refused to take undesirables, that is pished, gobby, smelly, obnoxious nasty people maybe we would get more respect, but with most it's fear of being reported to their LA's or (greed?) money, finance, mortgages etc etc that overcomes gut instinct.....

And there you have it, the dire truth of being a taxi driver, a man of lowly status that deserves little respect.

Yes, back in the day before the world was completely fu*ked, even muggers had standards. Now driving a taxi is a job of last resort. It’s a sort of, bottom of the barrel experience, akin to that of swimming through the flotsam and jetsam of society, while trying not to get any of it on your clothes.

Ah yes! I remember it well.

It's still a decently paid career.

Things could be better down here, but on balance they could be a lot lot lot worse.

Skull, Not ALL the punters are bad, the nice ones who appreciate a good service, I look after as they come back time after time.... With any job to do with the public there is always the downside.... It's just a matter of avoiding the downside. I think we are all aware of your disappointment with the trade, and your amusement in taking the pee pee, but that maybe the situ in your part of the world taxi wise. You may be right about falling standards across the board in many walks of life, not just the taxi trade. Like Sussex says it could be better and it could be a LOT worse.... Life IS unfair....

I love it on the TV UK Cop shows when the cops throw a drunk in a taxi to go home, like the driver WANTS a [edited by admin] in the car

I try to put the job into perspective!

Cops get injured/killed as do Firemen/Women, Coal miners, Steelworkers etc Shop workers get assaulted, along with years ago Rent collectors, Medics, Bar staff and so on................the point being is that it is not just us.

Having said that and it tends to work 97/98% of the time if you "Judge a Book by it's cover". This will tilt the odds in your favour by adopting the................"If they do not look the part - then they tend not to be". Unfortunately when drivers live in areas that are not affluent, it means business is tight - and that is when people (been there - but not any more) take risks. So a lot will depend on your circumstances - a £30/50/80 fare is attractive but not if it is going to take away your livelihood/quality of life. Sometimes (done it) it is better to turn it down and to make it up in time to come...............If it looks dodgy - do not do it, if they are in your cab before you know it - tell your white lies to get them out i.e I am already booked/whatever.

A taxi driver in Edinburgh would have to more than double his net income at the present date, to be at the same level when I started driving in the early nineties, pro rata.

Now hows that for putting things into perspective?
