New Taxi for Manchester Manchester is set to have a new style of black cab after Manchester City Council yesterday approved an application to licence an E7 taxi. The E7 is already approved by 97% of towns and cities across the UK, where it has become the most popular model of taxi[1]. Advantages for the public include a six-seat rear compartment, additional luggage space, lower CO2 emissions and enhanced disabled access, especially for wheelchair users. Cab operators and drivers benefit from improved comfort, additional safety features, better fuel efficiency and lower purchase costs. Jobs Boost Gerry Facenna, chairman of Cab Direct, which supplies the E7 black cab, commented: “This is great news. We’ve already had huge interest from the Manchester cab trade and are gearing up for an increase in production. “This move puts Manchester cab drivers and passengers on a level playing field with almost every other part of the UK and will also help create additional manufacturing jobs here in the Britain. Investment Manchester cab owner Paul McCormick, who applied to license the city’s first E7, said: “I’m relieved and delighted. I bet cab direct couldn't believe their luck when manganese bronze went belly up I think the Jobs are at the factory doing the conversions to WAV |

Taxi firm licence is jobs boost ABOUT 30 jobs could be created after Glasgow-based taxi maker Allied Vehicles was given permission for its vehicles to be used in Manchester. Manchester City Council gave the green light for Allied Vehicles taxis to be used after the local authority effectively suspended its existing rules. A maximum vehicle turning circle of just 25ft had prevented the company from supplying Manchester's taxi drivers because Allied's wheelchair-friendly vehicles are slightly larger than a London-style cab. But now this rule has been suspended. The council has changed its approach due to concerns that the collapse into administration of Manganese Bronze, the dominant supplier of London-style cabs, is hindering the supply of spare parts and new vehicles. Paul Nelson, managing director at Allied Vehicles, whose headquarters are in Possil, said: "They have realised the world has changed a little bit." He said Allied could snap up as much as 40% of the Manchester market, where some 1250 cabs operate. Mr Nelson said he expected Allied to create 20 to 30 jobs to cater with the upturn in business. It currently employs 370 people. Nigel Murphy, of Manchester City Council, said: "A review of our current hackney carriage licence policy will take place over the next six months." In the meantime, the city has agreed interim measures in which a group of council officers and elected members will consider applications for taxi licences. Previously it used the same rules as Transport for London, which included the requirement taxis complete a turning circle within a space equivalent to that available outside the Savoy hotel on The Strand.
