Private hire and hackney cab firms in West Lancs set to be hit with licence fee hike

PRIVATE hire and hackney cab firms, body piercers and second-hand dealers are set to be hit by hikes in licence and registration fees.

A report going before West Lancashire council on December 4 is recommending price increases in line with inflation from April.

If the proposals go ahead, it would see licence fees for private hire firms with one to 10 cabs rise from £240.79 to £246.09, while firms with over 50 cabs would see an increase from £812.96 to £830.85.

A 12-month licence for a hackney cab would go up from £276.13 to £282.22, while costs for replacing plates, transferring vehicle licences and re-sitting a knowledge test will also rise at the rate of inflation (2.2%).

Alongside the rises in taxi licence fees, skin piercing registration fees are set to increase from £91.33 to £93.34.

Second-hand goods dealer fees are set to go up from £98.30 to £100.46; recovery vehicle operator licences up from £77.70 to £79.41 and sex establishment licence fees would go up to £6,152.28.

The increases would net the council an estimated extra £3,220 on income in 2013/14. In the report that will go before the committee, the assistant director of community services wrote: “The council has a legal duty to carry out the functions of the legislation that dictates the proposed fees and charges contained in this report.

“Therefore, the proposed fees and charges contained in this report are levied at a rate that serves to cover the costs to the council based on the current rate of inflation.

“Accordingly, there is a potential impact upon the taxi trade, the travelling public and operators of the other licensed activities contained in this report.”
