Two cabbies attacked in weekend incidents

TWO taxi drivers were assaulted in separate incidents at the weekend.

The first was on Friday night after a 57-year-old driver had collected a fare from the Queens Tavern pub in Queens Drive, Bedford, at around 9.30pm.

As the victim left the location he was followed by a large, silver 4x4 which then overtook the taxi before breaking sharply causing the victim to stop. The driver of the 4x4 got out of his vehicle, opened the victim’s door and then punched him several times before trying to pull him out of the vehicle. The two passengers in the taxi were also assaulted by the offender who then fled the area.

Investigating Officer Detective Constable Ian Johnson said: “This was a vicious and seemingly unprovoked attack on a taxi driver who was going about his daily business. We have arrested an individual on suspicion of common assault, but I’d like to hear from anyone who was in Queens Drive and may have seen this incident take place.”

The offender is described as being a white male, 40-45 years old, around six feet tall, of stocky build and with short hair.

The second involved a 41-year-old driver who was injured during attempted robbery on Sunday morning. It began at around 1.17am in St Peters Street when two men were being taken to Thor Drive. They demanded the driver hand over his phone and cash and then punched the victim several times before leaving the scene on foot, empty handed.

One of the offenders is described as a white man, between 25-30 years old with a muscular build and 6’4 to 6’5” tall. The other is said to be of mixed race appearance and around 6’ tall.

Detective Constable Surinder Ram said: “Luckily the driver has sustained bruising to his face and no permanent injuries. With two men against one victim the injuries could have been much more serious.”

Anyone with information about either of these incidents is urged to contact Bedfordshire Police on 101 or text 07786 200011 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
