Dangerous taxis seized by police

A THIRD of taxis stopped during police safety checks are too dangerous to use.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary said it was disappointed that on-the-spot checks in Weston this week had shown eight out of 23 taxis were not roadworthy. They were all seized by police.

PC Marion Carrett, of the roads policing unit, said improvements were necessary.

She said: “The aim is to ensure that taxis in North Somerset are legal and safe.

“A similar check was conducted in June, and this was a follow-up to see if taxi drivers had improved the condition of their vehicles.

“Our findings show that some local companies are not ensuring their vehicles are roadworthy.

“Part of our role is to reduce road casualties, improve road safety, deny criminals the use of the roads, and enhance public confidence through increased visibility.

“We will continue to check taxis in North Somerset to increase the safety of members of public who use them.”

The checks were carried out alongside North Somerset Council’s licensing department, the Department of Work and Pensions and the Government’s Vehicle and Operator Services.

Further checks are now planned to ensure improvements are made.

Unsafe taxis can be reported to the police by calling 101.

Be interested to find out exactly what these dangers were. :-k

I would hope they weren't the normal bulbs or ripped seats etc etc.

So they should be taken off the road, on the run upto Christmas Taxis are going to be used more by the travelling public. We had a pull on Friday by VOSA and the Council, the ones that got pulled were OK but the normal happend when the Council came out to play, drivers went home.
