CABBIE DIDN'T TAKE WOMAN HOME

A Young woman was left shaken after a taxi driver made suggestive comments to her and failed to take her to the correct address, police said yesterday.

The 30-year-old Gloucester woman was walking along the Bristol Road in the early hours of Saturday morning, when she hailed a passing cab near the Peel Centre, Bristol Road. She asked the male driver to take her to her home address, but instead the driver made off towards Robinswood Hill.

Police said the taxi driver made suggestive comments during the journey, before eventually letting her out of the car near to St Barnabas' Church, Tuffley. The woman was not hurt in the incident but was left very upset. The car was a dark blue people carrier with an illuminated taxi sign on the roof.

The driver is described as having thick black hair and possibly being of Mediterranean origin. He was clean-shaven and thought to be aged between 30 and 35.

Police are now reminding other people to take care when using taxi or private hire vehicles, making sure the company is genuine and operates with proper licences and insurance.

surely it wouldn't take five minutes for the local licencing office to check what vehicles are licenced and come up with a list of names and address's of drivers with blue MPV's?

I cannot agree more - next time you get into a taxi on the rank, hail one or phone for one, make sure you see the certificate of insurance before you get into it :?

You would think so, but it may not have been a local cab - after all, anyone minded to try something like that would presumably see someone flagging while they were passing through another area as something of an opportunity.

However, this brings to mind the last edition of Crimewatch. One of the cases featured was a Range Rover of a specific colour which killed a cyclist in London.

Police said that there were only 85 in the UK, but they hadn't been able to check them all, hence the appeal on Crimewatch.

This seemed a bit bizzare to me, but there may have been more to it than meets the eye, which the police perhaps didn't want to disclose on the programme.
