Bus Driver caught Drink Driving in Student Area Police pulled over a bus driver travelling down Field Lane last week, under suspicion of driving whilst over the alcohol limit. The York based 45-year-old man was driving in the Badger Hill area at around 12.50pm last Tuesday when police became aware of his erratic and concerning driving. Responding to alerts from members of the public, the police attended the scene and the man subsequently failed a roadside breath test. The legal limit is 35 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath: the bus driver had twice this amount. The minimum sentence for attempting to drive whilst over the prescribed alcohol limit is one year's disqualification and a typical fine of around £300 - £400 for a first time offence. However, this can increase as far as a £5,000 fine and a 6-month prison sentence. A private hire company owns the bus and there were no passengers on board at the time of the incident. Students have been concerned that the bus driver may have been involved with a company that serves the university, but the man had no connection with the Unibus 44. The bus driver is due to appear at York Magistrates' Court on Monday 4th February 2013. source: http://www.theyorker.co.uk/news/citynews/13250 |
