U-turn on Isle of Wight festival taxi image
The Isle of Wight Council has made a u-turn on its decision to ban an image of a scantily-clad woman designed to promote the Isle of Wight Festival on the back of a taxi.
As Isle of Wight Radio first reported on Thursday, IW Festival promoter John Giddings called a decision to prevent the use of the image "hilarious", particularly as it had already been used on promotional posters in 2008.
It had been designed by promoters after they had been approached by Island taxi firm Alpha Cars, who wanted to help publicise the event on their cars.
"And if you look at it, it's a beautiful piece of art deco artwork. I'm desperately trying to put the Isle of Wight into the 21st century and what it does is it makes it look very parochial and small town mentality sadly," John said.
However, the Isle of Wight Council has now reversed its original decision, and will allow the taxi company, Alpha, to display the artwork.
Bill Murphy, Isle of Wight Council head of planning and regulatory services, said: "Having looked at this issue I believe the decision was the wrong one and we will inform Solo and Alpha that the council does not object to the design."
