5 arrested after armed taxi robbery in Epsom

Five people in Epsom have been arrested after a robbery at gunpoint in a taxi.

It happened on Friday night after a woman rang for the taxi at around 11.20pm. The driver picked up passengers from Worcester Park and drove them to an address in Stanton Close in Epsom.

A woman and one of the men got out, leaving the other male passenger in the back. The first man came back to the taxi a short time later, pointing a gun at the driver and demanded his wallet and his mobile phone, which the driver handed over. The second man got out of the taxi, also carrying a gun, and the three suspects disappeared towards Stanton Close.

The taxi driver was left shaken but unhurt after handing over his mobile phone and wallet.

A 42-year-old man, a 21-year-old man, a 32-year-old man, a 24-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman, all from Epsom were taken to Reigate police station last night.

Replica guns and stolen items were recovered after a police search of two properties.

Detective Sergeant Jules Knowles, who is investigating the incident, said:

"This was an extremely unpleasant ordeal for the taxi driver, who was just trying to do his job. Luckily he was not injured but the passengers still managed to get away with his wallet and mobile phone at great cost and inconvenience to him. However, we would like to reassure the local community that thankfully, incidents of this nature are extremely rare in this area."

The investigation continues.

The two offenders then fled towards Priestleys empty-handed.

Both were described as black males of slim build wearing hooded tops.
