Police warning after Coventry students set up illegal cab operation

POLICE are warning people to steer clear of bogus taxis after students set up an illegal cab operation.

It is believed a small group of students is ferrying people around near the University of Warwick.

PC Mick Parkes, campus policeman at the University of Warwick, has been offering advice following the reports.

Police declined to say whom they believe are responsible – but the Telegraph understands students are behind the money-making scheme.

It’s believed they have been handing out mobile phone numbers and illegally driving students around the campus for a small fee.

Illegal taxis are not insured, meaning people could encounter problems if they are involved in an accident.

A spokesman for the university backed police advice and urged students to use licensed taxis.

He said: “Always get in a legal taxi and if you hail a taxi make sure it is correctly licensed.

“If you book a taxi call a registered taxi firm – avoid any that are operating illegally.”

Police have waged a long battle with illegal taxi operators in Coventry, staging a series of crackdowns over the past decade.

Efforts have continued since a cap was introduced to limit the number of cabs operating in Coventry.

And in August last year a police operation to tackle unsafe taxis in the city found that half had defects – but all were licensed.

Those checks were carried out just after the Olympic football in the city.

The police warnings at the University of Warwick were also backed up by the university’s student union.

They wrote: “Warwick SU asks you to be vigilant with your safety and only travel in approved or licensed taxi companies in the surrounding area.

“These can be identified from the local council approved licence number which will be displayed on both the front and back bumpers of the taxi, along with the driver’s city council identity card.”

The designated taxi rank for the university is located on Health Centre Road.

The country and the food are simply the best, and, unlike most of the world, they actually like us.
