Skipped taxi fare costs cousins

A £40 taxi journey from Haverfordwest to Fishguard ending up costing two cousins £320 after they made off without paying the fare on September 29th.

Alec Peter John Davies, aged 26, of Seaview Crescent, Goodwick, and Michael Daniel Simms, aged 30, of West Street, Fishguard, pleaded guilty to the offence at Haverfordwest magistrates court last week.

Davies and Simms told the driver they did not have any money for the fare when they got into the taxi in Haverfordwest – but told him somebody was going to pay the fare when they got to Fishguard.

However after they got out in Fishguard to get some money, they did not return.

Police later identified the pair using CCTV footage.

The magistrates were told that some people at a party Davies and Simms were going to had agreed to pay for the taxi, but refused to give them any money when they arrived.

Solicitors representing the two cousins said they had set out with good intentions and dishonesty had only come into play when the people at the party refused to give them any money.

The court heard police had given them the opportunity to pay the taxi fare, but the defence said there had been a breakdown in communication between the police and defendants.

Davies and Simms were each fined £40 and ordered to pay £20 compensation, £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

“It was an expensive ride home,” the chairman of the magistrates bench said

No money, no ride.
