Wirral taxi drivers face more medical checks to ensure they're up to the job

TAXI drivers could be obliged to undergo a five-yearly medical examination under new rules being considered by Wirral Council.

At present, a driver is required to have an initial medical test to ensure they are physically fit - along with other background checks - before being granted a permit.

Currently, llicensed Hackney and private-hire drivers in the borough do not have to have a further medical examination until they reach the age of 65, after which they are required annually on renewal of the licence.

Members of the council's health and safety committee next week will be asked to review these arrangements then instruct officers to carry out consultation with drivers on a range of options for revised checks.

They include demanding checks annually; every three years or every five years after a driver reaches the age of 45.

A change of rules could bring Wirral's policy inline with other Merseyside councils.

Most authorities in the county ask for five-yearly medicals up to the age of 65 and then annually.

Fees charged by GPs for medical examinations are typically between £100 and £140.

The consultation will take place over six weeks and the results reported to a future meeting of the committee.

I think in this trade, not known for it healthy life-style, drivers should have medicals before they are 65.

Up to 50 maybe the initial one will suffice, but after that 5-yearly seems fair to me.

For what it's worth.

The medical, if you can call it a medical, that we have every 3 years until 65 when it becomes annual, is a complete waste of time. The last one that I had I had to tell the doctor that he had filled the form in wrong because he ticked the box to say that I was not a diabetic. He didn't actually ask me if I was a diabetic. I didn't think he needed to ask because he is my own doctor. #-o

In reality what is the medical going to achieve!

The job is not as many know, good for you, i.e lots of sitting down etc, therefore you are more likely to lose body strength and pile on the weight. So if you get to say 65 and you can still drive, are they going to say you cannot push wheelchairs into a cab, or lift loads of shopping because you are no longer strong enough!! For what it is worth they should be more concerned as to whether a driver is likely to have a heart attack - but the medical will unlikely be able to predict that.

I suppose the pen pushers can exonerate themselves by claiming - we make them have medicals.

Albeit they are useless in the overall big picture.

According to stats you're 64% more likely to have a heart attack with a sedatory job, but, there are certainly ways to detect if you are more likely to have one, perhaps they should concentrate on prevention and provide more information to drivers.
