Chance to comment on Mendip District Council draft policy for licensing of taxi and private hire vehicles

People are being urged to comment on a draft policy for licensing taxi and private hire vehicles in Mendip.

One proposal outlines harsher restrictions on people from outside the district gaining a district council licence unless they can provide proof that they mainly operate within the Mendip area.

There are also proposals to increase the driver competency levels and vehicle age restrictions, to ensure that passengers are kept safe.

Jason Kirkwood, principal licensing officer, said: "I urge local residents to respond and let us know their views on this draft document.

"This policy will detail how we administer and enforce the taxi and private hire licensing regimes, and so will be an important document to the council and those that are licensed or wish to be licensed.

"The policy will also tackle the issue of vehicle condition, ensuring that only those vehicles in a decent and safe condition are able to operate within Mendip.

"We need to understand the reasons why you might support or disagree with the policy, so please be clear about the reasons for your views."

The council will be holding open door workshops to discuss the proposals contained in the draft policy.

These will be held the Cheese and Grain, in Frome, today from 5pm until 8pm and on Tuesday from noon to 3pm.

The draft policy can be viewed at www.mendip.gov.uk or by attending a workshop.

All responses to the consultation must be in writing and received by the Licensing Team at Mendip District Council by no later than 2pm on Monday, May 6.

For more information on the draft policy or vehicle licensing call 01749 648999.
