South Tyneside cabbie failed to secure a child

Northumbria Police fined a South Tyneside taxi driver after stopping his vehicle during a routine check and finding an child unfastened in a car seat

A taxi driver was fined after failing to properly fasten a child into a car seat.

Police stopped the cab as part of a day-long project to check the safety of taxis in South Tyneside.

A total of 31 taxis were stopped, four of which saw drivers told to fix minor defects, three given taxi licensing advisory notices, one person fined and another motorist given a verbal warning about their driving.

Northumbria Police chief inspector Michael Barton said: “Operations like these not only ensure passengers are getting into roadworthy vehicles driven by legitimate drivers, but they also sends out a message that we do monitor vehicles.

“The overwhelming majority of taxi drivers operating in South Tyneside abide by the law and offer a safe service to their passengers.

“However, we need to ensure that people who use taxis in good faith are getting into insured and roadworthy vehicles being driven by legitimate drivers.”

Your right not many would as they are not by law required in a taxi, but if your on a school contract and the child is under 12 years (I think) seats are required.
SBC, issue them free to all taxis that have contracts

Basically the law is this;

In a licensed taxi or licensed hire car, if a child restraint is not available then the child may travel unrestrained in the rear. This is the only exception for children under 3, and has been introduced for practical rather than safety reasons. You should always think about ways to make sure that a child seat is available.

I would guess the child was under 3 and in a car seat, albeit not secured.
