Mansfield's new bus station opens to public The project survived a national review of funding for transport schemes
A new £11m bus station has opened in the Nottinghamshire town of Mansfield.

The building has replaced the previous station on Rosemary Street and is expected to serve five million passengers each year.

Facilities at the enclosed glass terminal include free Wi-Fi, shops, an electronic timetable and CCTV cameras.

Gary Nolan from bus company Stagecoach East Midlands said it was a major boost for Mansfield and was a "fantastic facility".
The council expects the bus station to serve more passengers than East Midlands Airport
Councillors said the project could attract investment of up to £60m and create 950 jobs
The railway station is linked to the new bus station via an enclosed footbridge
The station has 16 bays, controlled by automatic doors that only open when the bus has arrived
A time capsule containing a snapshot of life in Mansfield has been buried under the station

"Compared with the old bus station, this is a step change," said Mr Nolan.

"[The new station] is near is the town centre and also means we can have all the services on one good site."

The government has contributed £7.2m to the scheme, with the remainder coming from the county and district councils.

The project survived a government review of transport plans in October 2010 which led to other schemes being delayed or deferred.

Activities including an Easter egg hunt and performances from live bands will take place throughout the day to mark the station's opening.

From what I can see there's no taxis at the new bus station? No mention of them at all? But you can get free wifi? So how do I get in my wheel chair to Sutton in Ashfield ? Ok I get it, I use the free wifi and book a private hire.

I went down last night to have a look and they have been placed well out of the way, even the locals don't know where they are, they've been placed right at the other side of the bus station down a hill.

I was speaking to one driver who I know who said "the original price went to £11million from £9million", and the highest bidder was preferred.

There's also talk of one of the "INDEPENDENT" cretins who run the show in Mansfield walking away with a £30K bag of cash from "KEIR" Construction who won the contract.

They got a new bus station and we got 33 new, double decker greener, hybrid, all singing, all dancing electric buses, which promises state of the art travel, with free wifi, quality leather seats and low floor access. Hopefully that should reduce the subsidies given to bus companies but I somehow doubt it and I don't even want to think how much they cost or how much subsidy they were given to get them.
