Woman sexually assaulted after she got into taxi

Detectives have appealed for information following the attack on the 26-year-old victim in Preston.

Police said the woman was helped into a black cab taxi by a man outside The Assembly pub, in Lune Street, at around 3.30am on Sunday, March 31.

She was then subsequently sexually assaulted in the taxi.

Officers are keen to speak to the man who helped the woman into the taxi, who is being described as a ‘Good Samaritan’.

He did not get into the car himself and was not responsible for the sexual assault.

Det Sgt Steve Ryder said: “The man who helped the woman was wearing a white top and helped her to get into the taxi around 3.30am.

“If this was you, or you know who this was, please contact police.

“We believe this man may have crucial information which could help with our investigation.

“We do have CCTV of the man, although it’s not the best quality, but if you recognise him please come forward.

“I want to stress this man is a witness and acted as a Good Samaritan with the intention of getting the woman home safely, he did not get in the taxi with her.

“We are also trying to trace a woman who assisted the young lady out of the side door of the pub at 3.20am.

“Again, if this was you, please come forward, you may also have information which could assist us.”

A 44-year-old man from Accrington has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Anybody with any information can contact police on 101, quoting log number LC-20130331-0261, or the independent charity, Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not have to go to court.
