Nelson taxi driver denies sexual assault charges

A TAXI driver who gave a lift home to an acquaintance sexually assaulted her on a deserted industrial estate, a court heard.

Jhangir Akbar, 44, who was driving a white van, has been accused of pulling over on Lomeshaye Way, Nelson, while she was on the way home from night out in Brierfield, and trying to get on top of his female victim.

He is alleged to have unclipped her bra before carrying out the assault.

But a jury at Burnley Crown Court was told the alleged offence was interrupted when a car pulled up alongside the van.

In prosecution, it said Akbar put the van in reverse and drove away, before dropping the woman off at her home.

She had invited an ex-boyfriend round and he noticed she was behaving strangely. Eventually, she told him she had been attacked and the matter was reported to police.

Members of the jury were told they would also hear from two police officers who were on patrol on Lomeshaye at around 2am on the night of the alleged attack.

The officers went to speak to the driver of the van but the vehicle sped away. One of the officers was on patrol the following day when he noticed a similar van.

Akbar was behind the wheel and he told the officer he knew why he was being stopped.

Questioned by police, he said he had been giving the woman a lift home when she asked him ‘for a cuddle’.

He claimed the woman had instigated the sexual activity by placing her hand on his trousers but he had stopped anything further happening ‘because he felt it was not going anywhere’ and he drove her home.

Akbar, of Railway Street, Nelson, denies sexual assault and assault by penetration.

Taxi driver from Nelson cleared of sex attack

A TAXI driver has walked free from court after being acquitted of carrying out a sex attack on a woman he was giving a lift home.

Jhangir Akbar, 44, had insisted that any sexual activity between himself and the woman was consensual, during his trial at Burnley Crown Court.

Mr Akbar, of Railway Street, Nelson, was found not guilty of sexual assault and assault by penetration after a four-day hearing.

The court heard that the incident had emerged after the woman had failed to secure a taxi after a night out in Brierfield.

She was waiting outside Connelly’s chip shop when Mr Akbar, who was an acquaintance, pulled up in his van.

He agreed to give her a lift home to Nelson and the pair set off.

Giving evidence, Mr Akbar confirmed that he had pulled up in his van, on the Lomeshaye industrial estate.

Mr Akbar added: “(She) is my friend and she asked me for a cuddle.”

He also accepted, under questioning by the prosecution, that their liasion had gone beyond cuddling.

But he would later insist that she had been the instigator by placing her hand on his trousers.

The court heard he told her that he was a family man and did not want to go any further. He said he then dropped her off at her home.

Mr Akbar was arrested the following day after his van was recognised by police.

In the witness box, he also said: “I have done nothing wrong.”

So apart from driving to a secluded area, giving her a cuddle that went beyond a cuddle and speeding away from the police, this guy is an angel
