Sex-change passenger didn’t pay taxi fare

TAXI RUNNER ... Gavin Brannen, who told magistrates he is due to go through a gender reassignment process, pictured in a recent Big Night Out feature in the Gazette.

A MAN was arrested after running away from a taxi without paying the fare.

Gavin Brannen racked up a £27 fare, travelling from Newcastle to his home in Laygate, South Shields.

But the 20-year-old – who appeared in court dressed as a woman, said he wanted to be called Katie and is due to go through a sex change – fled once he arrived at his street.

Brannen pleaded guilty at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court to making off without payment.

Justin Gibson, prosecuting, said: “Two people got the taxi from Newcastle to home in Laygate.

“The driver asked if they had money to pay, and they said yes.

“When they got to Laygate, they ran out and into their home without paying.”

“While the fare was £27, the meter was on £41 by the time he could leave.” The court heard that Brannen has previous convictions for the same offence.

Laura Johnson, defending, said: “He had been on a night out with his boyfriend before they got a taxi to their home.

“He has a lot going on at the minute and is in the process of going through gender reassignment.”

Magistrates gave Brannen a 12-month community order and ordered him to pay £20 compensation to the driver and a £15 victim surcharge.

* Cory Elstob, 20, of Laygate, South Shields, failed to appear in court in relation to the same incident, and magistrates issued a warrant for his arrest.

Sounds like it, maybe when they catch the other one he or she'll be made to pay.

Dodging a taxi fare costs man £200

A SOUTH Tyneside man ran up a court bill of more than £200 after running away from a taxi without paying the fare.

Cory Elstob, 20, of Laygate, South Shields, pleaded guilty to making off without payment at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Elstob, who was not represented in court, had taken a cab ride from Newcastle to Laygate, South Shields, with Gavin Brennan at 3.15am on Monday, March 18.

The duo had told the taxi driver they had enough cash to pay for the trip, which cost £27.60. But both fled without paying when they got to their destination.

Brennan, also 20, appeared before South Tyneside Magistrate’ Court last week – dressed as a woman and saying he wanted to be called Katie ahead of a planned sex change – to plead guilty to the same charge.

John McGlone, prosecuting, said: “The taxi driver asked if they had the money to pay and they said they did.

“But they exited the vehicle and ran away. The police were called and Elstob told them ‘can my mum not pay for it in the morning?’.”

Elstob had been on a night out in Newcastle and believed he had the money to pay for the trip when he got in.

He was given a £110 fine, with costs of £85, a victim surcharge of £20 and ordered to pay £7.60 compensation to the driver.

Brennan was given a 12-month community order and ordered to pay £20 compensation to the driver and a £15 victim surcharge.

Sex-change taxi fare dodger back in court

A MAN who told a court he was undergoing a sex change after being caught dodging a taxi fare was back before magistrates yesterday – for leaving another cabbie out of pocket.

The accused appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court in April last year – under the name Gavin Brannen and dressed as a woman – after racking up a £27 taxi bill on a trip from Newcastle to South Shields before fleeing the vehicle.

The court heard on that occasion that he was going through gender reassignment and wanted to be known as Katie. The 22-year-old was back at the court yesterday, under the name of Katie Brannen, after dashing off at the end of another taxi ride from Sunderland to her home in Frederick Street, South Shields, without paying a £20 bill.

Brannen pleaded guilty to making off without payment and was fined £110 and warned that she had to learn the ‘consequences’ of her decisions.

Lee Poppett, prosecuting, said: “At 4.45am on Sunday, June 8, the taxi driver picked up three people in Vine Place in Sunderland. Two of them got out in East Vines in Sunderland, leaving only Brannen in the taxi. She said she had sufficient funds for the taxi.

“When the taxi got to Frederick Street she got out and walked away. The taxi driver asked what she was doing and she said she was going to get money for the taxi.

“He was suspicious and followed her.

“She ran away and the police were called.”

Laura Johnson, defending, said: “She didn’t have enough money for the taxi and has made a bad decision.”

Kenneth Webster, chairman of the magistrates, said: “You have had leeway from the court in the past. You need to understand the decisions you make have consequences, one of which is appearing in court again.

“We are not impressed – especially as you’ve done something similar in the past.”

Brannen was ordered to pay £20.20 compensation to the taxi driver, costs of £85 and a £20 victim surcharge – making for a total court bill of £235.20.
