Towcester Private Hire Driver Prosecuted For Smoking In Her Taxi

Following the investigation of a complaint, South Northamptonshire Council’s Health Protection team have successfully prosecuted Mrs Valerie Dean of Deano’s Private Hire, Towcester for smoking in her taxi.

Mrs Dean was found guilty at Northampton Magistrates Court on 5 April 2013 and fined £100 plus £150 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. This is the second time that Mrs Dean has been found guilty of the same offence, the first offence occurring in 2008.

Councillor Dermot Bambridge, portfolio holder for environmental services, said: “All taxis and private hire vehicles must remain smoke-free at all times to comply with the law, but more importantly it is a health hazard, which people must not be subjected to.

“Taxi and private hire vehicle drivers who insist on smoking in their vehicles run the risk of both fines and possible revocation of their private hire license if found guilty.”

The smoke-free regulations were introduced six years ago to protect public health by preventing smoking in enclosed public spaces. Since 1 July 2007 it has been illegal to smoke in a vehicle that is used as a place of work or that is used to transport members of the public.
