Cabbie taken for a ride A CHARD taxi driver has sent out a warning to people who make off without paying a fare – pay up or face being nicked. Alan Blasdale, who works for Woods Taxis, said money was already tight trying to run a home with wife Melissa and young daughter Sophia without having to put up with passengers ‘doing a runner’ without paying. “Running off without payment has not only cost me but is a criminal offence and in such cases can lead to prosecution followed by heavy court fines,” he said. The latest incident happened over the Easter holiday and he is giving the culprits the chance to come clean and pay the £7 fare or he can take CCTV footage to the police. “The people involved in this crime, when they have come to their senses, can pay any Woods’ taxi driver on the rank in town and that would be the end of it,” said Alan. “Alternatively, I can forward the CCTV footage obtained through the taxi to the local police and let them start the legal process which will eventually see them land up in court. “They will end up paying a lot more than the taxi fare, which would originally have cost them £7 had they bothered to pay it.” Alan added: “My advice to people who wish to take out such crimes against local taxi drivers costing them money and time is simple – if you need to get home and don’t have the money, at least think before taking a taxi and then committing an offence by running off because the cost of getting caught will be a lot more than it is really worth.” A spokesman for South Somerset District Council, the licensing authority for taxis, said that when passengers ran off without paying, taxi companies and their drivers were being deprived of money that was rightfully theirs, which could have an adverse effect on local taxi businesses. A police spokesman added that any passenger requesting a journey who dishonestly made off without paying may be guilty of a criminal offence.
