Ex-soldier fights for life after fall from moving taxi travelling from Burnley to Barnoldswick A 29-YEAR-OLD man suffered serious head injuries after falling out of a moving taxi. Lee Stockdale, 29, from Lower East Avenue, Barnoldswick, was in intensive care yesterday following the incident at 5am on Saturday. He was travelling from Burnley to Barnoldswick in a Hackney taxi with two other people, police said. Officers are speaking to the man and woman passengers to find out exactly what happened in the minutes leading up to the injury. Mr Stockdale, who was taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital by ambulance before being moved to intensive care at the Royal Preston Hospital, came out of the taxi in Colne Road, outside the BP Garage in Kelbrook. Yesterday, a police witness appeal sign had been put up outside the petrol station. A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “We received a call at 5.10am on Saturday saying that a 29-year old man came out of a moving taxi on Colne Road, Kelbrook. “We are still unclear how he managed to end up leaving the vehicle and are speaking to a male and a female passengers to try and establish what led up to the incident. “We believe that he came out of the door. However there was damage to a side window of the taxi during the incident. “He was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital. He suffered serious head injuries as a result of the incident.” Former slaughterman and stage builder Mr Stockdale appeared in the Lancashire Telegraph in 2008 when he described preparing for deployment with the 2nd Battalion, Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment. He was one of 600 soldiers spending five weeks in Belize to learn how to survive and fight in humid climates. His neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “He has lived there a while but he was away a lot with the Army. “I think he has been out of the Army for a couple of years now. “He is fairly quiet and doesn’t cause any problems.” A resident who lives near the garage said: “The first I knew about the accident was when I saw all the police on Saturday morning. “They were there for quite a while gathering evidence and talking to people.” Messages from concerned friends on his Facebook page read: “Hope you will be all right Lee. Is it me or are these sort of incidents happening a lot more frequently now ? Any sort of fall from a moving vehicle is likely to result in serious injuries as well as a loss of earnings for the driver whilst the police forensics test the vehicle |
