Airdrie taxi driver caught with heroin with almost £3million street value

A taxi driver is facing jail after heroin worth almost £3 million was found at his Airdrie home.

John McGill, 42, admitted being in possession of the class A drug when police arrived at his front door in Chapel Street.

Officers were about to force entry into the property when McGill opened the door and said: “There’s something in that cupboard, go look.”

The High Court in Edinburgh heard yesterday that a haul of high quality heroin was discovered.

Advocate depute Murdoch MacTaggart, prosecuting, said the 6.5kg consignment – in parcels marked XXX – had a purity between four and six times the usual “street level” drug.

If cut, or diluted, for sale in “tenner bags” the deals could realise as much as £2,785,710 the court was told.

McGill pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of the heroin.

Judge Lord Jones was told that a surveillance operation by police in England had followed a Transit van rented by McGill on April 24 last year.

The information was passed to Strathclyde Police – together with a warning that the consignment of heroin was not likely to remain in McGill’s home for long before being moved on.

Officers immediately went to the house in Chapel Street and were preparing to put the door in when McGill let them in.

He told them where the heroin was when informed of the reason for the visit.

Mr MacTaggart said the search was halted twice, once for a police officer to arrive with a warrant and a second time to call in a scene-of-crime examiner to take photos of a suspicious bag and its contents.

Inside the carrier bag were seven packages marked XXX.

The Transit van and a taxi parked at the back of the house were also searched but no further drugs were found.

McGill made no comment when he was being questioned or when charged.

Lord Jones heard that McGill has a record for dishonesty and minor road traffic offences but no previous convictions relating to drugs.

The judge called for background reports and allowed McGill to remain on bail pending sentence next month.
