Durham council and cabbies clash over new North Road taxi rank COUNCIL chiefs say a new taxi regime on Durham’s busy North Road will improve the area for cabbies, passengers and residents. The long-standing North Road taxi rank, outside Santander, is to be replaced with another closer to the bus station, outside Subway – currently a loading area. Traffic bosses say the rank will provide more spaces and be open longer. Dave Wafer, Durham County Council’s traffic manager, said: “After significant consultation, we are changing the North Road taxi rank in order to improve arrangements for operators, passengers, local residents and businesses and other traffic. “The new rank will be longer, allowing more taxis to use it and reducing congestion and inconvenience to people living nearby. “It will be in operation from 10am to 6pm, while the current rank only operates from 8am to 6pm. “The new location will be more visible to people arriving at the bus and train stations, improving the service for visitors and increasing trade for drivers. “Immediate access to Milburngate roundabout will also help reduce journey times as taxis will no longer have to travel via Crossgate in order to go north or west.” Crossgate residents have complained that taxis using the cobbled street late at night causes too much noise. Councillor Nigel Martin previously called for removable bollards to be installed to block the route. However, Adrian Fets, chairman of Durham Independent Taxi Association, said the changes posed a health and safety risk, as taxi doors would be opening onto a road regularly used by buses. “I think there’s going to be an accident. It’s absolutely crazy,” he said. Mr Fets also questioned where taxis would park between 6am and 10am. The council has made a number of changes to the city centre taxi regime over recent years. Last October, it replaced a rank on Claypath with another on the Prince Bishops shopping centre slip road. Since the trade was deregulated in 2011, the number of taxis operating in Durham City has rocketed from 74 to more than 1,500. source: http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/1 ... taxi_rank/ |
