Ban for cabbie who failed to renew licence

Taxi rank on Fox Street, Sutton.

A MAN who worked as a taxi driver in Sutton without having the correct licence has been banned from driving for six months and fined £300.

Arfan Ahmed, of Overdale Road in Derby, admitted acting as a Hackney carriage driver on three occasions and driving without insurance at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

The court was told that Ahmed (28) has been working as a taxi driver and his licence was due to expire on 5th October last year. He received a reminder in July but failed to apply until 4th October.

On 12th November, Ahmed rang Ashfield District Council - but in the background, a person could be heard saying, ‘can you take me to Huthwaite?’

An investigation revealed that Ahmed had worked as a taxi driver on 9th, 10th and 11th November. Magistrates also heard that because he did not hold the correct licence, the insurance was invalid.

In mitigation, the court was told that Ahmed had refrained from driving until he received his CRB check back on 9th November which he believed meant he was entitled to work again.

Magistrates were also told that he would face ‘exceptional hardship’ if he was banned from driving because he cared for a brother who has cerebral palsy and relied on a car.

However, his claim of hardship was not accepted and he was banned from driving for six months. He was also fined £300 and ordered to pay costs of £85 along with a victim surcharge of £20.

I didn't know he'd been taken to court. It was me who notified the Council that his badge had expired. I'm I a grasser now??

The best thing about it is he thought because his CRB had come back he was OK to drive, he's been driving like that since November of last year until the middle of March this year.
