Men in court after jumping onto roof of Huddersfield taxi

TWO men jumped on a taxi after drinking, a court heard.

Callum Wright, of Birkhouse Lane in Moldgreen, and James Brown, of Fenn Street in Manchester, were before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

The men, both 22, admitted a charge of criminal damage on April 11. Jill Seddon, prosecuting, said that the offence happened at 3am in Huddersfield town centre.

Taxi driver Rashid Ahmed was sitting in his car on Cross Church Street when he saw two men running towards his vehicle.

The two men jumped onto his vehicle, ran across the roof and then jumped back onto the road before walking off.

Mr Ahmed called police and then followed the men down the street and pointed them out to the officers.

In interview Wright and Brown said that they were drunk and had been going to get some food.

Ms Seddon said: “Mr Wright said it was a stupid thing to do. He said he was sorry that he damaged the car.”

Magistrates heard that Mr Ahmed’s Skoda Octavia was left with dents on the roof and bonnet. The driver estimated the cost of repairing it at £350.

Brown also admitted possession of a class B drug after a small bag of cannabis was found on him.

Both Wright and Brown had no previous convictions, magistrates were told.

The bench slammed their behaviour as ‘foolish’ and told them to pay £150 compensation each. Both men were also told to pay £20 victim surcharge and £42.50 prosecution costs.

Brown was also hit with a £65 fine for possession of the drugs, which will be destroyed.
