Isn't this one of those stories which is irresistible to venture, but is coming at the problem from completely the wrong end.
If you're looking for compensation, why not question why buses can run around for large parts of the day empty, and through the night taking away our country jobs, wastefully spewing out carbon generated by highly subsidised fuel?
If we are in the people transport business, then why can't we have a level playing field and get the subsidy too. Or, if that's not possible, why should public bus transport get it?
If only we had an organisation that could articulate the arguments, eh?
