Council to decide tonight on number of Hackney Carriage Licences to be handed out Published 29 Apr 2013 SCORES of taxi drivers are expected to turn out to hear a decision on the number of Hackney Carriage Licences that will be issued by the Royal Borough. The Royal Borough's Licensing Panel is due to meet tonight at 6pm at the Town Hall, in St Ives Road, Maidenhead, to decide how many new licences should be handed out each month. The council issued five additional licences per month from April 2012, but this was halted in January to conduct a survey into the taxi trade to determine how much public demand there was for extra taxis. The Royal Borough has issued 138 licences. At a meeting of the same panel in January, three conflicting petitions were presented - one calling for an increase in the number of licences issued, another for a reduction and a third calling to stop further licences being issued. They were all signed by Hackney Carriage drivers or residents of Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead. The petitions calling for a reduction and halting of the issuing of licences cited an over-saturation of the market while those calling for an increase argued more jobs were needed. The meeting was due to be held on Wednesday last week (17/4) in the council chamber at the Town Hall, but was moved to Monday (29/4) to the larger Desborough Suite to cope with an anticipated large crowd http://www.sloughobserver.co.uk/news/ro ... anded-out/ |

Restrictions removed from the number of licensed taxis allowed All restrictions are to be removed on the number of licensed taxis allowed on ranks in Windsor and Maidenhead. Last year the Royal Borough eased restrictions by allowing a maximum of five new licences a month, outraging existing taxi drivers who stormed out of a council meeting swearing at startled councillors. But at a meeting of the authority's Licensing Panel on Monday last week councillors voted to remove restrictions altogether. They felt that the earlier increase in licences had led to a drop in crime and disorder by making more taxis available to take late night revellers home. Cllr Carwyn Cox, cabinet member for environmental services, said that the Royal Borough was now in a minority of local authorities that still practised some form of restriction. He said: “Anyone who wishes to engage in this trade who meets our strict safety requirements should be able to do so.“ The Royal Borough already plans to increase spaces at taxi ranks in Maidenhead at Grove Road, Shoppenhangers Road, King Street, Queen Street and Nicholsons Lane. More are being looked at for Maidenhead town centre and for Ascot High Street. The change does not mean that anyone will be able to take a taxi out though. The license application fee of £500 covers a wide range of requirements, including a medical examination and vehicle safety checks. It also ensures that drivers have ‘the knowledge’ of local streets and journeys. Cllr Andrew Jenner, chairman of the licensing panel, added: “Passengers using a council-licensed and liveried hackney carriage are assured they are getting into a vehicle which has been checked out thoroughly and with a licensed driver.” http://www.maidenhead-advertiser.co.uk/ ... 052013.htm |
