DON’T blame US for turning Lanark Bus Stance into a danger zone.

That was the strong message this week from the town’s taxi trade as legal steps began to ban cabs and private cars from using the stance, with the aim of preventing a repeat of last summer’s tragedy when a 70-year-old man was knocked down and killed there.

In the immediate aftermath of the death of Mr Brendan Geraghty of Biggar, at least some of the blame for the accident was directed at taxis using the exit to the stance as an unofficial rank, despite there being an official one just a few yards down the opposite side of Bannatyne Street (pictured).

Bus drivers were critical of the basic design of the early-Seventies circular stance, saying it was too small and tight for safe turning, with parked taxis and private cars using it as a turning area just adding to the hazards faced by pedestrians walking across it.

Now, almost a year after the tragedy, South Lanarkshire Council has begun the process of introducing by-laws limiting use of the stance to buses and coaches only.

Now there's a Surprise....A typically convenient scapegoat for the Virgin pure and faultless Councils.
