Man who used knife to rob taxi driver is jailed

Streetly robber sentenced to four years after threatening cab driver in Handsworth

A Streetly man who threatened a taxi-driver with a knife in Birmingham for drug money has been jailed.

Michael Pigott, of Thornhill Park, was jailed for four years after being found guilty of the robbery at an earlier hearing.

The court heard how the 28-year-old had called a taxi from the Gosta Green pub in Holt Street, Aston, to take him to his home address in Streetly.

But as they began the journey, he directed the taxi driver to a street in Handsworth where he held a knife to the 42-year-old and demanded he hand over his cash so he could buy drugs.

Pigott denied committing the offence but CCTV footage showing him get into the taxi was used as evidence at Birmingham Crown Court and phone records proved he made the call to the taxi company.

DC Kim Savage, from Birmingham CID, said: "This was a particularly nasty pre-planned robbery, where Pigott made the conscious decision not to go home with the bus fare he already had, but instead to rob a taxi driver at knife-point."
