Smart move in the taxi trade

A taxi company has added a Smart alternative to its fleet of vehicles.

Diss-based Scole Cabs now includes a single-passenger Smart car which can save its customers money on their journeys.

Proprietor Clive Blakesley, who runs the business with his wife Gill, said: “It is an economical way to book a taxi which is reflected in passenger’ fares.

“There is space for one passenger and room for luggage too.”

The Smart car came into use on April 19, giving the firm 11 vehicles, the rest ranging from normal cars to four, six and eight seaters.

“So far the customers the love the Smart car,” said Mr Blakesley, who has had local bookings as well as for longer trips to Norwich and Bury St Edmunds.

Although he describes the new vehicle as spacious, he believes some people will still prefer others in the fleet for airport trips, other than Norwich, and longer journeys.

The single-seater taxi can offer travellers a saving of around 20 per cent on a journey, he said, and anyone travelling by themselves is told about the Smart car availability when they book.

Mr Blakesley said the taxi trade was becoming more and more competitive, with more taxis vying for local trade.
