Telford taxi driver robbed of several hundred pounds

A 43-year-old taxi driver was robbed by a number of men after they forced him to drive his taxi to a Lloyds TSB cash point on Wrekin Drive in Donnington at just after 7.05pm on Sunday 5th May.

The victim had driven the men around all day in what he thought was a genuine fare – including driving to Manchester and back to Newport and Wellington – before the situation suddenly changed and he was robbed of several hundred pounds when he was forced to use the cash point.

After being forced to go to the cash point in Donnington, the victim was then forced to get more money from his house to give to the men and then the following morning he was forced to meet the men again and hand over more money.

The victim felt so threatened by this incident that the incidents were not reported to the police until two days later.

Two men aged 29 and 21 have been charged with robbery and kidnap in connection with this incident, while a 17-year-old man who was also arrested has been released on police bail.

Speaking about this investigation, Detective Sergeant Ian Rutherford said:

“Although two men have been charged in connection with this incident we believe there are still other offenders outstanding.

“With that being the case we would like to hear from anyone who may have information that could aid our investigation, especially anyone who believes they can suggest possible names for other individuals involved.

“Not only did they leave the 43-year-old victim of this incident very shaken by his ordeal, but we also suspect this robbery may be linked to the cash in transit robbery that occurred at the One Stop shop on Dawley Road in Arleston early last month.

“In this incident at 8.20pm on Tuesday 2 April, a security guard was punched and kicked a number of times by three men who stole several thousand pounds as he delivered it to the shop.

“Although three men – aged 29, 21 and 19 – have been charged with this robbery, once again we believe there may be further offenders we need to trace in relation to it.

“Anyone with information about either of these two incidents, especially anyone who feels they can help us identify other offenders, is asked to contact police on 101 or 0300 333 3000, quoting incident number 326N 020413 or 720N 080513.

“Alternatively, pleased remember that Crimestoppers can also be called anonymously on 0800 555 111 if you’d rather pass on information without identifying yourself.”

Maybe stories like this would help Birmingham council reconsider allowing drivers to take cash up front.
