Taxi driver’s attack ordeal


Two men who hijacked a black cab and terrified the driver in a Preston city centre attack have been jailed for a total of three years.

Driver Jamshed Ahmed was left with a broken foot and another driver suffered a broken leg when Mr Ahmed lost control of his vehicle and collided with a queue of taxis. Daniel Houghton, 40, of Curwen Street, Preston, and James Gardner, 52, of Ramsey Avenue, Ribbleton, are now beginning jail sentences after smashing safety glass and grabbing the terrified driver by the throat.

Judge Pamela Badley, 
sentencing, said: “He was 
absolutely terrified.”

Mr Ahmed’s ordeal began when he picked up Houghton and Gardner at the taxi rank in Church Street, Preston in the early hours of September 19, last year. In a bid to attract the 
attention of police officers, drove through a red light and the wrong way down a one-way street, 
towards the taxi rank, where he knew officers would be patrolling the queue. He collided with the waiting taxis and Houghton and Gardner fled the taxi.

At trial they claimed the driver had lost his temper and driven dangerously.

Judge Badley jailed both men for 18 months after the jury found them guilty of causing grievous bodily harm to both drivers.
