Crack down on bogus Newton Abbot taxi drivers Wednesday, May 29, 2013 POLICE and Teignbridge Council have joined forces to crack down on illegal taxis touting for business in the Newton Abbot area. They have been made aware of the problem by legitimate taxi drivers and are now clamping down. Rogue cab drivers are offering cut price rides home from pubs and clubs at weekends and are putting the passengers' safety at risk. "The vehicles aren't checked and regulated," said Insp David Hammond (pictured), based at Newton Abbot police station. "It's unlikely the driver would be covered by insurance either if they are involved in an accident and are carrying passengers. We're working with the district authority and will take appropriate action." Cllr Mike Walters, Teignbridge Council's executive spokesman for corporate services, said: "We are working with the police to crack down on illegal taxis in Newton Abbot. Providing a taxi service without the proper licences is a very serious offence and one we take very seriously. "We accept some may not know they are breaking the law and might just think it's an easy way to earn some cash but it's really important people realise this is an issue we take seriously. "Taxi drivers are required to have proper licences in place to protect themselves and their customers. "Those who operate on an ad hoc basis do not have the relevant insurance and it may be their vehicles are not fit for purpose either. "Not only does it put the public safety at risk, but it also affects local taxi firms who are abiding by the law by effectively taking business away from them. "We would urge everyone to ensure that before they get into a taxi they check there is a taxi plate on the rear of the vehicle and the driver is wearing a badge.
