Hunt for thug who spat at Leeds taxi driver in racial attack at station


A taxi driver was racially abused in a “despicable attack” while he waited to collect a pre-booked fare outside Leeds train station.

The thug then spat in the Asian taxi driver’s face after he refused to take him to west Leeds.

Police have launched an appeal for information following the incident and they have released an image of a man they believe can help them with their enquiries.

The taxi driver, who was a 35-year-old Asian man from Keighley, was waiting outside the busy station in the city centre for a fare.

It is believed that he was then approached by the yob who offered him money to take him to the Farsley area of Leeds.

The driver refused and he was then racially abused by the thug.

The man is then thought to have thrown a sandwich he was eating at the car and spat in the driver’s face before fleeing from the scene.

PC David Smith the investigating officer from British Transport Police, said that the force would not tolerate racial abuse.

He said: “This was a despicable attack on a man who was simply trying to do his job.

“We will not tolerate violating behaviour and racial abuse such as this, and we will always seek to trace and convict anyone who engages in this unacceptable behaviour.”

Police are appealing for anyone who might have seen the incident at around 11.15pm on Friday, May 17, to come forward.

They are looking for witnesses to help them trace the culprit and aid their enquiries.

PC Smith added: “The taxi driver, a 35-year-old Asian man from Keighley, was waiting outside the station for a previously booked fare when a man approached his car offering him money to take him to the Farsley area of Leeds.

“When the driver refused, the man began to racially abuse him before throwing a sandwich he was eating at the car.

“He then spat in the drivers face before making off.”
