Bournemouth taxi driver Terence Collins guilty of sex offences

A taxi driver described as "every woman's worst nightmare" has been convicted of three sex offences.

Terence Collins, 59, from Bournemouth was found guilty by a jury of two counts of rape and one of sexual assault by penetration.

The court heard one of the rapes involved a 14-year-old girl he followed home before forcing her into his taxi.

Collins, described as "a dangerous sexual predator", will be sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on 11 July.

In 2010, he followed the 14-year-old girl from Bournemouth town centre as she walked home before grabbing and raping her in the back of his taxi.

Two years later, in March 2012, Collins raped and sexually assaulted a 20-year-old woman after she got into his vehicle following a night out with a friend.

Julia Woodward, senior prosecutor for CPS Wessex, said: "Terence Collins is every woman's worst nightmare - a man using his job as a taxi driver to attack women when they are at their most vulnerable.

"Thanks to the bravery of these two young women in reporting the offences to Dorset Police and then giving evidence in court, a dangerous sexual predator will now be jailed."

With a gap of 2 years between these offences the chances are they are not the only offences committed

Thats assuming they were in a fit enough state to remember what happened or too embarrassed to admit it. this is a major problem too many see this trade as an easy way to get access to women for sexual gratification
stopping it is only achievable if you take the free market out of the equation and bring the trade up to a high professional standard attracting quality drivers and investment in safety through higher earnings

Bournemouth minicab driver Terry Collins forced 14-year-old into his car and raped her

A “DANGEROUS” minicab driver who raped a 14-year-old Bournemouth girl after forcing her to get into his minicab is facing a lengthy prison sentence.

Bournemouth Crown Court heard how “sexual predator” Terence Collins had molested the terrified teenager two years before raping a trusting 20-year-old woman who got into his cab following a night-out with a friend in March last year.

Both victims, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, were forced to relive their shocking ordeals in court. Collins denied two offences of rape and one sexual assault, involving the woman.

But he was found guilty on the jury’s second day of deliberations.

Collins, 59, of no fixed abode, worked for Boscombe-based Star Radio Cars and held a private hire licence from 2002 until March 12 last year.

Prosecutor Carolyn Branford-Wood told the court how Collins had grabbed his teenage victim who had been aware a car was following her as she walked home from Bournemouth town centre. He forced her into his car before raping her.

Speaking after the case Julia Woodward, the Crown Prosecution Service’s Senior Crown Prosecutor, described Collins as “every woman’s worst nightmare,” adding: “He used his job as a taxi driver to attack women when they were at their most vulnerable.

Ms Woodward praised the bravery of Collins’ victims for reporting the offences, giving evidence and ensuring Collins was finally brought to justice.

She added: “Thanks to them a dangerous sexual predator will now be jailed. We hope that this conviction will bring some kind of comfort and that they will now be able to move on with their lives. Our thoughts are with them.”

•Collins’ licence was suspended after Bournemouth council was alerted by Dorset police and revoked on May 3 last year. Council licensing officer Keith Evans said: “When applying for a licence a full criminal records check is carried out. We take safety of the travelling public very seriously and, as such, will suspend a licence immediately following an alert from police that an investigation has begun. Where necessary the board will take the decision to revoke a licence.”

Ashley Miller, chairman of Bournemouth Station Taxi Association, warned the public to be wary of what vehicle they use following a night-out.

He stressed: “Terry Collins has never been a licensed hackney carriage driver in Bournemouth. He held a private hire licence which is totally different to a taxi licence. They are issued work via the radio company they are licensed with.”

Mr Miller advised taxi travellers to take a mental note of the hackney carriage plate number, ensuring in Bournemouth that the taxi is yellow and in Christchurch black.

With safety in mind, many taxis and private hire vehicles have been fitted with CCTV or cameras which provide images which can only be downloaded by the police and council. Star Radio Cars declined to comment.

Pervert minicab driver Terence Collins "filmed girls in his taxi"

A PERVERTED cabbie awaiting sentence for two rapes had filmed other women who had travelled in his taxi, it has been claimed.

Following his trial, Terence Collins, 59, was convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl after forcing her to get into his vehicle and raping a 20-year-old woman two years later. Both were forced to relive their terrifying ordeals at Bournemouth Crown Court.

Speaking after the guilty verdicts, John Tye, Bournemouth Taxi Trades Association chairman, said: “We are sickened by the abhorrent actions of a lone private hire driver. As far as we are concerned no sentence can be too severe.”

He praised Collins’ victims courage, adding: “The rotten apple in a barrel of 1,000 licensed hackney carriage and private hire drivers in Bournemouth is still one too many.”

Mr Tye told the Daily Echo how other taxi drivers had been concerned by Collins’ behaviour for three years. He claimed that Collins had been taking “improper and wholly unsuitable images” of young women and uploading them to a social networking site.

In a deputation to a council licensing board on June 2, 2011 Mr Tye voiced his concerns about recording equipment in vehicles. Subsequently members decided that images from in-car cameras could only be available to the council and Dorset police, with unauthorised recording equipment banned from cabs.

Mr Tye said: “We feel that the trade has to be even more vigilant and that vulnerable young women should be made more aware of potential dangers.”

He claimed CCTV footage from Collins’ cab had been lost by the council but a spokeswoman said: “We have no record of receiving any footage.”

She added that Collins’ had been granted a private hire licence in 2002 which had been suspended on March 12 last year following concerns by the police. It was revoked on May 3 last year.

Rapist minicab driver Terence Collins jailed

The judge said Terence Collins would remain a danger while he was still sexually active Continue reading the main story

Minicab driver guilty of sex attacks

A rapist minicab driver described by a prosecutor as "every woman's worst nightmare" has been jailed.

Terence Collins, 61, from Bournemouth, was convicted in May of two counts of rape and one of sexual assault between 2010 and 2012.

The jury heard one of the rapes involved a 14-year-old girl he followed home before forcing her into his minicab.

Collins, also described as "a dangerous sexual predator", was jailed for 16 years at Bournemouth Crown Court.

In 2010 he forced the 14-year-old into his cab in Bournemouth and raped her after driving out towards Ringwood.

'Intelligent man'

In March last year he picked up a 20-year-old woman in the town and raped her - later sending her a photograph taken during the attack.

Judge Peter Johnson told Collins he had not shown a shred of remorse.

He said Collins was a "callous and intelligent man who knew exactly what he was doing and one who enjoys control over women".

He said he considered Collins would remain a danger to females while he remained sexually active.

Det Con James Lees, of Bournemouth and Poole CID, said: "Terence Collins abused the position of trust that he held as a driver and preyed on vulnerable women.

"It is thanks to the bravery of two of his victims that this conviction and sentence has come about."

Police believe there may be more victims of Collins who have yet to come forward and have urged anyone with concerns about him to get in touch.

Pervert minicab driver who lured young women into his minicab with disco lights and sweets jailed for 16 years after two terrifying rapes

  • Terry Collins cruised the streets at night looking to entice potential victims
  • He raped a girl of 14 in March 2010 and a 20-year-old woman two years later
  • Hackney drivers spent three years raising concerns to the licensing authority
  • He has been jailed for 16 years after being found guilty of two counts of rape

A minicab driver rapist who lured young women into his cab by decking it out with disco lights and sweets was today jailed for 16 years for two terrifying sex attacks.

Terry Collins, 61, who was known as the ‘Disco Cabbie’, was told by a judge that he remained a danger to women for as long as he was sexually active.

The predator cruised the streets at night looking to entice potential victims into his brightly-lit ‘honey trap’ minicab.

The pervert took photos of female passengers in drunken and inappropriately-dressed states using a dashboard camera.

In March 2010 he raped a girl of 14 after making her get into his minicab before forcing himself upon her.

Two years later he raped a 20-year-old woman reveller after she got into his Citroen Picasso cab at a rank at the end of a night out.

Police fear Collins has attacked other women customers in the past but they have never come forward.

Hackney drivers spent three years raising their concerns to the licensing authority about the predator’s suspicious behaviour and his oddly-decorated minicab.

Their fears were raised further when he posted a number of his photos of female fares on his Facebook page in June 2011.

Officials ordered him to strip out the camera and the disco and strobe lights as well as a collection of soft toys and lollipops, but he kept them up.

He went on to attack his second victim after he opened the front passenger door as she staggered towards a taxi rank in Bournemouth, Dorset, during the early hours of March 10 last year.

As he drove along, with his eyes on the road, he indecently touched the shocked woman. He then pulled into some darkened garages where he forced her to perform a sex act on him and raped her.

Police arrested bespectacled Collins and quickly linked him to the 2010 attack on the 14-year-old.

He denied two charges of rape and one count of sexual assault making his two victims go through the ordeal of giving evidence in front of a jury.

Grey-haired Collins was found guilty and was today jailed for 16 years.

Jailing him at Bournemouth Crown Court, judge Peter Johnson said: 'There is not one shred of remorse whatsoever that emanates from you.

'You are a callous and intelligent man who knew exactly what he was doing and one that enjoys control over women. You exercised no self-constraint and when asked to stop you carried on.

'You represent a danger to females while you remain sexually active.'

Detective Constable James Lees, of Bournemouth police, said afterwards: 'Collins abused the position of trust that he held as a driver and preyed on vulnerable woman.

'There may be more of Collins’ victims yet to speak with police. If they have any concerns about Collins I urge them to contact the police as soon as possible.'

Collins’ second victim, a mother-of-one, told of her ordeal.

The woman, now aged 21, said: 'I left a karaoke bar in the early hours of the morning and walked to a nearby taxi rank.

'What happened is all a bit blurry but the front passenger door was open and ready for me and I just got in.

'We were driving for a little while when he touched me inappropriately. He put his hand down my shorts without taking his eyes off the road. I didn’t say anything to him, I just froze.

'He pulled up to the garages behind my flat and touched me again even though I said "no" over and over again.

'I just went numb and and was just thinking about getting out of there alive. All I could think about was my child.

'It lasted about half-an-hour and afterwards I threw a £20 note at him and got out of the car and phoned the police.'

The woman said the attack had had a devastating effect on her.

She said: 'I couldn’t leave my home for about two weeks and lost two stone in weight. It took a few months for me to even be able to get back in a taxi again.'

John Tye, chairman of the Bournemouth Taxi Trades Association, said that licensing officials at Bournemouth council had questions to ask about allowing Collins to remain on the streets for so long.

He said: 'Collins was allowed to operate a minicab decked out in such a way to attract young and vulnerable girls.

'Within his car there were extensive disco-type fairy lights and countless cuddly toys right across the dashboard together with a container of sweet lollipops.

'The Trade presented totally unsuitable images of women that were downloaded from his Facebook profile to the licensing board.

'The question has to be asked that had the vehicle not been so high profile and a honey trap, would his victims have been drawn to it?'

Collins, from Bournemouth, held a private hire licence for 10 years but also acted as a rogue Hackney carriage, illegally picking up punters on the street.

He worked for Star Radio Cars in Bournemouth. A spokesman for the firm said: 'We followed all of the correct procedures and he was suspended as soon as we were notified (of his arrest). Our sympathies go out to all those involved.'

Now most of us would like to see this thing remain in prison for good, but 16 years is a longer sentence than I suspect the victims were advised it could be.

So well done to the judge and the jury.

in other words - despite the taxi trade rumour mill and the council lack of action - he gave a radio rent each week.

Action needed to regain passenger trust after "disco cab" rapist case, says taxi boss

A TAXI trade boss says a partnership needs to be created to regain the trust of passengers after a cabbie was jailed for raping two women.

The suggestion comes after private hire driver Terence Collins was sentenced to 16 years in prison at Bournemouth Crown Court on Friday afternoon following a trial in May.

He raped a 14-year-old girl in his taxi as well as a 20-year-old woman.

The court heard Collins, who drove a “disco cab” to attract young women, had molested the girl two years before attacking the woman.

Now taxi chief John Tye, who voiced concerns about recording equipment in vehicles when he attended a council licensing board meeting in June 2011, has pledged to make changes to ensure the horrific crimes are never repeated.

Mr Tye, chairman of the Bournemouth Taxi Trades Association said: “Collins’s sentence goes some way towards the severity of his crimes.

“Since his conviction the trade has considered how this horrendous situation can be improved in the future.

“There have been mistakes which must now be rectified.

“In order to regain the trust of the travelling public there has to be a partnership created between the public, the council and the trade to ensure greater vigilance in public protection.

“In 35 years in this trade there has been the only prosecution of this kind that I can recall, one too many, but only one.”

Collins worked for Boscombe-based Star Radio Cars and held a private hire licence from 2002 until March last year.

Both his victims were forced to relive their ordeals in court because he denied his vile crimes.

Their courage was praised by police, prosecutors and members of the taxi trade.

After the trial, senior Crown prosecutor Julia Woodward described Collins as “every woman’s worst nightmare”.

Ashley Miller, chairman of Bournemouth Station Taxi Association, said: “He has disgraced our trade, not only in Bournemouth but nationally.”

He said Collins was a “monster” after “the ordeal that he has put two young women through”.

“Theirs is and always will be a life sentence,” he added.
