Man fined for taxi fracas

A drunk who assaulted a taxi driver in Stirling city centre has been fined £280.

James Addison (21) was also ordered to pay his victim the same amount in compensation after he spat at and punched the driver twice to the face during a flashpoint in Murray Place on February 9 this year.

Stirling Sheriff Court heard how Addison turned up drunk at the rank at around 9.15pm on the Saturday night looking to get a taxi home to Cumbernauld.

But Addison was told that he didn’t have enough cash for the fare and later flipped after apparently taking the huff over a comment made about his mobile phone that he had provided as “collateral”.

Fiscal depute Gail Russell said that Addison had handed over his phone to guarantee that he would cover the fare but then became agitated and asked for it back.

The fiscal depute added: “The accused and the taxi driver exited the vehicle and after that happened the accused spat at the complainer and then punched him twice to the right-hand side of the face.”

The court heard that no injury was reported.

Addison, from Cumbernauld, pleaded guilty to the assault. He had his not guilty plea of acting in a threatening or abusive manner accepted by the Crown.

His solicitor told the court that Addison had been drinking prior to the incident but was now seeking help in relation to his alcohol consumption. Of the offence, the lawyer added: “ He is thoroughly ashamed of himself.

“Collateral had to be given as he only had £20 but the taxi driver explained that it would be £30. He handed over the phone, which was cracked, and Mr Addison’s position is that the driver made remarks about the worth of the phone.”

Sheriff Derek O’Carroll imposed the fine and compensation order.

This seems very mild compared to what the taxi trade itself does to those who have the temerity to argue for de-restriction.

Perhaps a case of the pot calling the kettle black?
