Taxi assault rates in Windsor and Maidenhead highest in the county


WINDSOR and Maidenhead has the worst rate for assaults in taxis in the whole of Berkshire.

A Freedom of Information (FoI) request submitted by the Observer has revealed almost half of the assaults in taxis recorded by police in Berkshire in 2012/13 took place in Windsor and Maidenhead - seven out of 15. While the figures for assaults in taxis has fallen across Berkshire since a peak of 43 cases in 2010/11, in Windsor and Maidenhead, the figures have remained steady - six in 2011/12 and five in 2010/11 and a peak of eight in 2009/10.

Chief Inspector Lee Townsend, deputy commander for Windsor and Maidenhead police, said: "Windsor and Maidenhead has a very busy night time economy and so it's hard to compare to other areas within Berkshire with similar local demographics.

"What we can say is there has been a 15% reduction in violent crime within the Royal Borough and we will continue to work to make sure it is a safe place for a night out."

Of the 15 reported assaults in Berkshire, seven involved sexual assault on a female over the age of 13 with at least two of these known to have taken place in Windsor by taxi drivers on passengers.

Ch Insp Townsend added: "We also continue to evaluate the number of crimes associated with any agency and if we identify disproportionate activity or a spike in crime, we will take action.

"We work hard with our partners in the local authority and licensing trade to police the night time economy, doing everything to prevent and deter criminal activity."

It is, but maybe the trade has got off it's behind and decided to report all incidents of assault, compared to many areas who think assaults on drivers are all part of the job. :sad:
