Coventry taxi maker considers move from Holyhead Road

Coventry-based black cab maker The London Taxi Company has said it is considering moving from its factory but wants to remain in the city.

The taxi manufacturer is currently based at a site on Holyhead Road.

The company was sold to Chinese firm Geely in February after its previous owners went into administration.

Vehicle production is expected to resume in mid-August. A company spokesman said any move is likely to be to a purpose-built site.

Vice-president, Peter Johansen, said there was a real need to make the move.

'Poorer cousin'

Mr Johansen said: "This factory was built in 1927 so it's old and reached the end of its working life.

"We've already been in discussion with Geely that as part of their investment in us we're looking to find new premises to build the next generation of taxis.

"With modern facilities you can improve the quality of the vehicle.

"If you go to any Geely factory in China it's absolutely state of the art and we're the poorer cousin of them at the moment.

"It's most likely to stay in and around Coventry because we've got a lot of well trained workforces and we need the skills that those people bring to the business."

About 99 out of 176 jobs were lost after the move into administration last year although more than 30 new vacancies have recently been offered to former staff.

London Taxi Company offering new vacancies at Coventry site Workers who lost their jobs at a Coventry-based taxi maker are being given the chance to apply for about 30 new vacancies. The London Taxi Company, formerly LTI, was sold to Chinese firm Geely in February after owners Manganese Bronze Holdings went into administration. About 99 out of 176 jobs were lost after the move into administration. The jobs are at the Holyhead Road site and Unions say 77 former workers are being sent letters about them. Thirty-two new vacancies will be offered to about 77 ex-production team members, with a view to "low-level production" starting in mid-August. Peter Johansen, vice president of The London Taxi Company, said: "We've already recruited 38 employees this year and we've got 58 in total that we're going to be taking on in the coming months [across the UK]. "Thirty -two of those will be in production in the Coventry factory in the next couple of months, so it's good news." He said full production would hopefully begin by the end of September. "We've sold over 200 new cabs in the UK in the last couple of weeks and we've got a five-week waiting list for a new cab," he said. "Internationally it's going to be a record year for us because we've already taken orders for over 800 vehicles and there's many more orders pending." Peter Coulson from the Unite Union said he is "quite optimistic" that there will be more jobs in the future. I hope it goes well. It's previous sh** motors that have let those staff down, not the staff themselves.

I thought they'd ship production abroad when they got up to full steam.

I would still be holding the back on the main course. looking for premises and finding them are 2 different animals. If the caqn't find "suitable" new premises and can't find any "suitable" land to build any on, within their time frame, everything may still move to China.
