Three jailed for GBH of Ali ArmaganTHREE men have been jailed for their part in the murder of a Turkish gangster in Turnpike Lane last year.
Minicab driver Suleyman Tonbul, 54, of Grange Road, Upper Edmonton, his 26-year-old son Hassan and unemployed Mehmet Senel, 24, of the same road pleaded guilty to conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm to Ali Armagan who was shot in the neck on February 1, 2012.
Apparently a member of The Bombacillers, a Hackney Turkish gang, the 32-year-old was targeted by the Tottenham Turks in a series of revenge attacks; the gangs had been feuding since at least January 2009 when Ali's brother was assaulted in a Manor House night club.
The assault sparked several other shootings and arsons and an attempt on Armagan's life on March 8, 2009 and the murder of three more men: innocent Ahmet Paytak, 50, in Holloway on March 22, 2009, Oktay Erbasli, 23, in Tottenham on October 2, 2009 and Cem Duzgan, 21, in Clapton on October 5, 2009.
On February 1, 2012, Armagan had parked his Audi A8 in Langham Road at 2.30pm, having dropped of his friends for an appointment nearby. He stayed in the car with another friend.
An hour later, two masked men approached the car from nearby Graham Road, one had a handgun and fired six times into the driver's side of the car. The men ran away and Armagan got out of the car but collapsed on the pavement and died.
Police have still not been able to identity of the gunman and his accomplice.
A witness said after hearing shots, he saw the men heading towards a Vauxhall Astra parked in Langham Road. Two men, Younis Sagir, 24, from Wood Green, and Ozan Toprak, 28, of Tottenham, were arrested on March 8, 2012, with the murder. But after a trial both were acquitted at the Old Bailey on March 7 this year.
The father and son and Senel were arrested in connection with the shooting on September 13, 2012. Today Suleyman Tonbul was sentenced to eight years behind bars. His son Hassan was jailed for 11 years and Senel was jailed for ten years at the Old Bailey.
Sentencing the trio, judge Anthony Morris QC said: “The attack was part of an ongoing gang feud, and the harm that you intended to cause Mr Armagan was very great; even though you did not carry out the murder.
“There was a degree of premeditation in your actions and it was an attack that happened in broad daylight in a very public place, which I regard as an aggravating feature in this case.
“You will spend at least half of your sentences in prison, and you will be on license for the remainder of the sentence.”
The court also heard how officers from Trident remain keen to speak to two men in connection with the murder. Kemal Eren, 26, and Omar Murat, 27, both from Tottenham area, are thought to have left the UK shortly after the incident.
Investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Kenny McDonald said: "Mr Armagan was shot in broad daylight near a busy tube station as schools ended for the day. Those responsible clearly had no thought for the safety of innocent people in the area. We would urge anyone with further information about the murder of Ali Armagan to come forward and speak to our team.
"Trident, alongside Haringey police, has worked tirelessly to not only solve this murder but reassure the community that we will not tolerate this kind of open gang warfare on the streets of London.
"We will continue to use every resource at our disposal to ensure those responsible or involved in such crimes are brought to justice."
