Man jailed after attacking taxi driver

A 21-YEAR-OLD man has been jailed after an assault on a taxi driver left him with a dislocated shoulder.

Jacob Chantler, of Livingstone Close, Old Hall, had been drinking before getting into Ranveer Singh’s taxi on November 17 last year.

A dispute began after Chantler gave him £2 for the £3 fare before the argument erupted into violence.

Meirion Lewis-Jones, prosecuting, said: “The defendant got out of the taxi and demanded Mr Singh did the same.

“The defendant threw two punches and Mr Singh went to the ground before a struggle ensued.

“Mr Singh was punched again before he tried to claw at the defendant’s face to push him away.”

Warrington Crown Court heard on Friday Chantler then bit the victim on his right palm and got him in a head lock causing him to choke before kicking him in the shoulder.

Neighbours who saw the incident said Chantler looked drunk and aggressive and shouted at him to leave the taxi driver alone.

He swore at them before running into his house.

Mr Singh was taken to hospital where he was treated for scratches and the bite mark and kept in for two days after doctors re-set his shoulder.

Chantler had two previous convictions for unrelated matters in 2006 and 09.

In a victim statement Mr Singh said he was now worried about collecting passengers from the area where the incident took place.

David Rose, defending, said the incident was out of character and said he had got drunk to escape the stresses of life at home.

Judge Nicholas Woodward sentenced him to eight months behind bars.

He added: “Taxi drivers have a difficult job at all times particularly conveying drunken and aggressive members of the public .

“They are entitled to expect protection from this court.”
