Kidderminster teen held taxi driver at knifepoint A TEENAGE boy held a taxi driver at knifepoint and forced him to drive from Kidderminster towards Worcester in a terrifying late-night attack. The Kidderminster boy, now 16, was just 15 when he hopped into the taxi of cab driver Mark Donovan after drinking in the park with friends in the early hours of December 2 last year. A nightmare journey followed where the teen, who cannot be named for legal reasons, threatened to stab Mr Donovan, put the point of the kitchen knife to his thigh, grabbed his throat and demanded his money, as well as causing a crash by pulling the handbrake on unexpectedly. He broke down in tears and shouted: “I love you mom” as Judge Michael Cullum sentenced him to 18 months in a Young Offender Institution for robbery and possession of a knife. Prosecutor Stephen Davis told the court that the boy got into the front passenger seat of the cab after booking one to pick him up. When asked for payment up front, the boy refused and showed Regency Taxis driver Mr Donovan the knife and demanded to be taken to Worcester city centre. The teen, who had 11 previous convictions for 14 offences including four for battery and others for robbery, criminal damage and common assault, also demanded Mr Donovan turn off the taxi radio and, after they passed through Ombersley, suddenly pulled the handbrake, causing the car to spin out of control and crash. He also stabbed the dashboard, smashed the internal light with the knife and slashed other parts of the cab. After the car passed the Claines roundabout on the A449, Mr Donovan managed to stop the car, took the keys and ran for help. When police arrived, they found the boy nearby. The court heard that the teen, a member of the traveller community, had ADHD and learning difficulties and did not mean to cause the taxi driver any harm. Judge Cullum told him: “At the age of 15, you committed a really serious offence of robbery. “The facts of this offence are, quite frankly, horrendous. Mr Donovan was essentially held at knifepoint with a kitchen knife. You threatened to stab him directly. “You started damaging the interior of the car and you pointed the knife into his thigh. “You were in total control of that man, who must have been terrified. He was almost being held hostage by a man with a knife threatening to hurt him.” The boy will serve half of the sentence in custody. http://www.kidderminstershuttle.co.uk/n ... nt/?ref=nt |
