Carlisle taxi driver fined for knocking down elderly woman

A taxi driver who knocked down an elderly woman while reversing his cab in Carlisle has been ordered to pay £225 by a court.

Michael Donnelly, 49, of Parkside, Belah, admitted careless driving when he appeared before District Judge Gerald Chalk sitting at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court.

Jane Mackrill told the court that on April 11, Donnelly picked up a woman passenger from the Greystone Community Centre on Close Street.

After she got into his cab he reversed his Skoda from the car park onto the road, but a passerby banged on his cab to get him to stop as he had hit an elderly woman pedestrian.

The victim of the accident was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle with bruising and a cracked ankle bone.

Donnelly told the court that he hadn’t seen the woman because of a “blind spot” in his rear view mirror as he reversed. He immediately alerted the emergency services. He said it was a momentary lapse in concentration. Donnelly was fined £120 plus costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £20.
