Taxi driver jailed over attack on ex-wife's husband

A taxi driver who fractured the skull of his ex-wife's husband has been jailed for nine years after admitting attacking him. Waiter Salim Uddin was beaten with a hockey stick as he came home from work in Luton, Bedfordshire, on 23 March.

Abdul Mojnu, 40, from Bletchley said he had waited seven years to attack him, Luton Crown Court heard. Recorder Tim Clark said it was a terrible ordeal for the victim and Mojnu "acted like a thug". Mojnu had laid in wait with two other men, who were never captured, to ambush the waiter as midnight approached. Mr Uddin was beaten in School Lane and his ordeal only ended when a neighbour came out and the attackers fled.

Prosecutor Helen Guest said Mojnu told Mr Uddin: "I have wanted to beat you up for seven years. Your wife will come and take your dead body." The court heard Mojnu tried to use an alibi that he was on duty as a taxi driver in Milton Keynes but this failed.

Mr Uddin was transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, with a fractured skull and cheek bone and bleeding to the brain. He has made a good recovery from the physical injuries but was left with sleep, concentration and vision problems. Mojnu, of Queensway, Bletchley pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Judge Clark told him: "This was a planned attack on a targeted victim. It was a terrifying ordeal for him and you are wholly to blame. "You chose to act like a thug because of your inability to accept your wife was entitled to leave you and start a life with a new man."

Natalie Goffee, defending Mojnu said: "He is deeply remorseful for his actions, and accepts he was wrong."
