Anger over taxi fares

TAXI drivers in Henley are unhappy at having to use meters set by operators.

South Oxfordshire District Council has voted in favour of introducing meters and allowing drivers and operators to continue to set their own tariffs.

Members of South Oxfordshire Taxi Drivers’ Association wanted the council to set their fares, claiming it would make prices fairer.

They say the council’s decision will disadvantage smaller companies.

Association secretary Munir Hussain said: “We are not happy but we cannot do much about it — they did the consultation and there were more comments in favour of companies setting their own prices.

“There is going to be a problem on the ranks because some people will charge £5 on their meter, some £4 and some £6.”

Mr Hussain, of Streamline Executive Cars, used to work in Reading, where the council sets the fares and he says the system works well.

Taxi operators will have to install meters by October 1.

And some will start low with a small click-over, and others start high with a large one.

And if the firms agree a price amongst themselves they will get banged up.
