Taxi dress code proposals scrapped

Proposals to consult with the taxi trade in Lancaster about a formal dress code for cabbies have been shelved by councillors.

At a city council licensing committee meeting last week, councillors discussed whether or not to consult on an “appropriate dress code” for drivers, following a report from the council’s licensing manager.

The dress code would have applied to both hackney carriage drivers and private hire drivers.

The current council regulations in relation to dress code state that the licensee should be “clean and respectable in his dress and person”.

But it was proposed by coun Tony Johnson and seconded by Coun Billy Hill that no consultation be carried out with the trade and upon being put to the vote, five voted in favour of the proposition and one against, with two abstentions.

Andy Kay, chair of the Lancaster District Hackney Carriage Assocation said: “It’s up to us how we should operate our business, it is not something that should be imposed on us by this council.

“Some passengers will prefer a driver in formal wear, while others are happy with a driver dressed informally.

“They will make that choice when they choose a taxi.”

I have never understood this formal dress business in this day and age unless you are running people about at the luxury end of the market I don't think the customers are that bothered as long as you are reasonably smartly attired

I agree 100%, if you want a driver all suited and booted then phone a Chauffer Company.

I think most of those work for chauffeur services and the like I doubt many of them are ordinary ph/hackney drivers since it seems to be mostly LHr and LGW you see a lot less of that at other airports
