Leeds taxi drivers struck off amid 225 complaints Fourteen Leeds taxi drivers have been struck off and 225 complaints have been made since the start of the year, figures from the city council reveal. Of the 14 licences revoked, more than half were due to sexual, violent and serious driving offences. The largest number of complaints related to driving standards and inappropriate behaviour. Leeds City Council said it took allegations of sexual and violent behaviour "very seriously". More than 10,000 taxi driving licences were issued by the council this year, with 8,500 of these to private hire. Five taxi drivers were struck off after sexual allegations were made against them and one was barred after violent misconduct. Two licences were revoked because of serious driving offences, while three had been withdrawn because drivers were plying for hire. 'Key position of trust' Other revocations were for dishonesty, driving disqualification and failing to disclose convictions. It is not known whether those struck off were drivers of private hire or Hackney Carriage vehicles. Of the 225 complaints made against taxi drivers, 67 of those were about their driving standards, 32 were related to inappropriate behaviour, 27 were about the cab operator and 25 were about cabbies being a nuisance with parking. There were also 17 complaints about drivers breaching their licence conditions, 13 related to plying for hire, 12 for over-charging passengers, 10 about criminal behaviour and five for being rude. Councillor Rebecca Charlwood, chair of Leeds City Council's licensing committee, said: "A taxi driver is in a very key position of trust and we take any allegation of any kind very, very seriously. "The five cases do range from just talking and discussing sexual approaches to touching and then further. But we take them very seriously and we'll revoke a license on that basis." source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-23664834 |

I seem to remember reading somewhere (2 or 3 years ago) that there are more than two Ph firms in leeds running 1000 + cars but it is a while back plus doesn't the Leeds metropolitan area covers several outlying towns dotted around the outskirts ? |
