Hackney carriage fares set to rise by 26pc in Sandwell

Hackney carriage fares in a Black Country borough will rise by up to 26 per cent under new plans.

Charges for the first mile for passengers in Sandwell will increase from £3.15 to £4, and every subsequent mile will increase from £1.47 to £1.60. Waiting times are also set to increase by 26 per cent from £12.60 per hour during the day to £16.

Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for Highways and the Environment, Councillor Maria Crompton, has been invited to consider an increase in fees, after council bosses were approached by trade members.

A council report states meetings have been held between officers and trade representatives in order to arrive at an agreed table of fares.

The last increase in hackney carriage tariffs took place in January 2009.

The report highlights that it will have no financial impact on the council as increased income will go towards the hackney carriage firms and drivers themselves.

The report also states other changes will include an increase in extra charges for hiring a hackney carriage on a Sunday or Bank Holiday, and fines for soiling the vehicle will go up from £26.25 to £50.

Spokesperson for Sandwell Taxi Association Onkar Basra said this was something that drivers have been campaigning for over the last two years.

He said: “We have seen our costs rise dramatically, but not seen our fares go up. The cost of fuel, insurance and other fees to keep us on the road have all increased so we desperately needed this rise.”

This comes just days after it was revealed there were 1,000 fewer taxi drivers on the streets of the West Midlands and Staffordshire since the recession. There have been repeated calls by cabbies for a cap on the number of licences issued as they complain there is not enough work to go around.

All well and good providing they all stick to the meter price and don't start going under the meter rate; that's what the drivers have been complaining about in my area.

so they campaign for a rise on the meter then complain about everyone dropping fares and undercutting..am I missing something??

Correct =D> =D> =D> =D> We've got them round here, they'll strip a fare to the bare bones just so they can get one over on you.

I still can't understand why some are prepared to work for nothing..am I missing something?

Last night I had an enquiry go from A to B, my price £35. Can you do it for £24, NO. Cn you meet me half way? Yes, start walking and I'll do that. End of call.

I wasn't that desperate to lose £9 to earn £24.
