Lancaster bank holiday taxi fares could be cut The headache of having to pay extra for taxi fares on bank holidays and early in the morning could soon be over. Hackney Carriage drivers in Lancaster have voted to scrap “time-and-a-half” fares on bank holidays (except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day), and only charge the extra between midnight and 5am, rather than 7am. The change comes at the same time as a 10p increase per mile on Hackney Carriage journeys in Lancaster. Andy Kay, chairman of the Lancaster City Hackney Proprietors Association, said: “The 10p rise per mile takes into account the increase in driving costs. “Previously time-and-a-half fares ran until 7am, but we hope to give shift workers an easier ride by reducing the time frame that this applies to. “We’re also hoping to appeal to people who would not normally use a taxi on bank holidays.” A city council spokesman said: “The issue of fares will be reconsidered by the Licensing Regulatory Committee at a meeting on August 27.” |

They will need an extra 50% of punters just to maintain their existing income. |

If they are quiet on those days its posable folk know they are more expensive so shy away, but once they find out they are cheaper they might use them. We have never charged a higher tariff for sundays and bank holidays, its a stupid thing to do |

It is the way things are going customers more and more expect NOT to be charged bank holiday fares and unsocial hours because elsewhere PH firms aren't charging extra for it so their attitude is if the cut price PH operators can then everyone can In Peterborough they scrapped unsocial hours tarriffs because there was so much competition that there was little point they run tarriff 1 24 hours a day but the PH firms have slashed their fares about 30% since then to maintain the differential |

But it would need a 50% increase in punters to just maintain existing takings. No good having an increase of 25% and still be worse off. |

typical TT can't think of anything intelligent to say so resorts to namecalling The point is that at the end of the day it is the consumer who pays your wages so it is the customer/consumer who is in a position to demand the lower rates and taxis are about the only form of tramnsport that charges extra for bank holidays Eventually we will all be working for normal tariff on bank hols like the many drivers who already do it is the way of things now that customers expect the cheapest price which is the regular tariff 1. it is not "being an idiot" removing bank holiday rates just giving the customer what they want and expect |

Personally I think the best thing to do is put your feet on bank holidays. Whilst I understand your point about the customer being king I'm also a customer of the insurance company, fuel company, car company etc etc they don't sell me things for a pittance so why should I? |
