Man from Great Harwood loses battle to become cabbie

A GREAT Harwood man has lost his fight to become a taxi driver in Hyndburn.

Shakeel Ahmed, of St Hubert’s Road, was refused a private hire vehicle driver’s licence by Hyndburn Council’s Judicial Committee in May. It concluded Mr Ahmed was not a ‘fit and proper person to hold such a licence’ because he was convicted of three counts of battery in July 2012.

Mr Ahmed challeged the Judicial Committee’s decision and took his fight to the magistrates’ court.

After representations from solicitors representing both the council and Mr Ahmed, the magistrates dismissed the appeal, and ordered Mr Ahmed to contribute £75 towards the council’s legal costs.

Members of the committee will be made aware of the ruling at a meeting on Tuesday, September 10.

2012 is very recent I doubt that his sentance would be deemed "spent" obviously a council that does have standards
